According to a statement issued by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, an ex officio investigation was launched against Alican Uludağ, the Ankara correspondent of the German news outlet Deutsche Welle Turkish service, based on some posts he made on his social media account, on allegations of “publicly insulting the President,” “publicly disseminating misleading information,” and “denigrating state institutions.”
Uludağ, who was detained in Ankara, was transferred to Istanbul during the night. It was reported that the journalist did not give a statement to the police and was referred to the Istanbul Courthouse to provide his statement to the prosecutor.
Following the procedures at the prosecutor’s office, Uludağ was brought before the Criminal Court of Peace with a request for arrest on the charge of “publicly insulting the President,” and the court ruled for his detention pending trial.
