MSD calls for urgent action to deal with the accelerating decline of economic and living conditions

In a written statement on Wednesday, the Syrian Democratic Council (MSD) said it observes with deep concern the accelerating decline of economic and living conditions throughout Syria.

“This deterioration has generated widespread and justified public frustration, as citizens struggle daily to meet their most fundamental needs. Consequently, the MSD asserts that ensuring food and health security, and guaranteeing access to basic sustenance, must now be treated as an urgent national priority that cannot be overlooked or delayed,” said the MSD statement, which further included the following:

“The humanitarian situation across Syria, from Kobani to Deir ez-Zor and Raqqa, through neighborhoods like Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh, and including the capital Damascus, now serves as a stark reflection of the nation’s profound economic collapse. This crisis directly threatens both national unity and social stability while intensifying the daily hardships faced by citizens. Soaring prices, a collapsing currency, and the disappearance of job opportunities have driven unemployment, destitution, and poverty to levels unprecedented in Syrian history.

Ongoing governmental policies that restrict economic activity and maintain blockades on certain regions have paralyzed local markets. This situation is worsened by the absence of emergency relief plans, a lack of price oversight, and unchecked monopolistic practices. Recent increases in the prices of bread, electricity, and fuel have added unbearable weight to citizens, pushing public frustration toward dangerous levels of despair. In response, the MSD urges the Interim Government and all executive bodies to immediately implement clear economic rescue plans aimed at protecting citizens, securing food and health necessities, and ensuring that basic goods are priced according to people’s actual purchasing power.

The MSD further stresses that addressing these legitimate popular grievances requires an approach rooted in national responsibility. This demands the implementation of equitable and inclusive economic policies that respect regional particularities and guarantee non-discrimination in the distribution of resources and services, thereby alleviating the crisis’s severity and rebuilding public trust in state institutions.

Achieving a genuine resolution to the living crisis necessitates broad national cooperation and sincere political will. Such efforts must prioritize the citizen’s welfare above all else, working to protect their dignity and uphold their fundamental right to a safe and decent life.

In this context, the MSD renews its appeal to all national and social actors to unite in overcoming this critical phase and to strengthen the principles of solidarity and collective responsibility. This call is rooted in our firm conviction that addressing the people’s immediate living ordeal is the essential foundation for any viable political future—one dedicated to building a free, stable, and just Syria that guarantees a dignified life for all its citizens.”
