KCDP: 22 women murdered in Turkey in January

According to a new report by the We Will Stop Femicide Platform (KCDP), 22 femicides were committed in January, and 14 women died under suspicious conditions.

The report noted that 73 percent of the women were killed in their homes, 50 percent were killed with firearms, and 23 percent were killed by the men they were married to. It emphasized that this situation is the result of violence against women being rendered invisible.

The report stated that of the 22 women murdered, one was killed on the pretext of economic reasons, one was killed because she did not accept a reconciliation proposal from the man her daughter was married to, and that the pretext for the killing of the remaining 20 women could not be determined.

The report also included the following information: “Women were most often killed by the men they were married to. Of the 22 women killed in January, 5 were killed by their husbands, 3 by men they were in a relationship with, 2 by someone they knew, 2 by their fathers, 1 by her son, 1 by her brother, 1 by a man she was formerly married to, 1 by a man she was formerly in a relationship with, 1 by a relative, and 1 by her former son-in-law. The relationship between the perpetrator and 4 women could not be determined. This month, 23 percent of women were killed by the men they were married to. Women were most often killed in their homes. Of the women, 16 were killed at home, 3 on the street, and 2 in isolated places. The place where 1 woman was killed could not be determined. This month, 73 percent of the women killed were murdered in their homes. Women were most often killed with firearms. Of the women killed this month, 11 were killed with firearms, 5 by strangulation, 4 with sharp objects, 1 by being thrown from a height, and 1 by beating. Fifty percent of the women killed this month were murdered with firearms.”

The provinces where femicides were most frequent are as follows: Adana 1, Ankara 2, Antalya 5, Bartın 1, Çorum 1, Istanbul 4, Izmir 4, Konya 1, Manisa 1, Mardin 2.
