As the blockade on the northern Syrian city of Kobanê continues, international reactions against HTS and other armed factions affiliated with the al-Jolani government are also steadily increasing.
In the Canadian Parliament, Ziad Aboultaif, a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development (FAAE) and a Conservative Party Member of Parliament, brought the latest developments in Syria onto the parliamentary agenda.
The MP, who represents Edmonton Manning, stated that the situation remains fragile for members of Syrian minority communities: “The new government makes promises but has not yet been able to provide guaranteed security for its citizens. Recent massacres targeting the Druze community around Suwayda and the ongoing blockade of Kobane by HTS fighters are especially concerning.”
Ziad Aboultaif pointed out that the Kurdish and Druze communities want to help rebuild Syria after years of civil war, adding that their efforts, however, are frequently met with suspicion, distrust and violence.
“The government of Syria and indeed all Syrians need to ensure their actions match their words. Working together, they can build a new Syria, a prosperous, democratic state with justice and equality for all its citizens that can once again shine on the world stage,” he added.
