Humanitarian crisis deepens in Kobanê, under heavy siege for 17 days

Following the launch of large-scale attacks against North and East Syria on January 6, the city of Kobanê has been under a severe siege by armed groups affiliated with HTS for more than 17 days. With the Turkish border also closed, the city has been isolated from all sides, and access to basic necessities of life has been completely cut off.

With the onset of the attacks, thousands of civilians were forced to take refuge in Kobanê from different cities. After the wave of attacks reached the city, Kobanê was surrounded by HTS forces. Water, electricity, and internet services have been cut off, while access to food and medical supplies has become almost impossible.

Basic necessities are running out

Due to the siege, essential food items—especially sugar, tea, and vegetables—have reached the point of depletion. It is reported that baby formula, which is vital for newborns, has completely run out. Rice, bulgur, flour, and other staple food items are also inaccessible. The humanitarian crisis in Kobanê is worsening with each passing day.

Hospitals sound the alarm

Healthcare institutions in the city are facing a severe crisis. Medications and medical supplies in hospitals are rapidly running out, and generators cannot be operated due to fuel (diesel) shortages. Because of power outages, newborn babies in particular are at great risk, and it has been learned that some infants are being kept alive under primitive conditions.

Agreement is not implemented

Despite the agreement signed between the Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazlum Abdi, and Ahmed al-Sharaa—which includes the lifting of the siege on Kobanê—it is reported that this provision has not been implemented to date. It is reported that all lifelines of the city remain cut off due to the siege.

People continue their resistance

Despite all these harsh conditions, the people of Kobanê continue their resistance. Young people, women, and the elderly are standing against the attacks in many parts of the city, while collective solidarity practices are being developed to keep public morale high. As in the past, Kobanê is once again trying to survive through the spirit of resistance.

Authorities are calling for the immediate lifting of the siege and the opening of humanitarian aid corridors, while also reacting to the silence of the international community.
