Medical team and students provide care for displaced people in Qamishlo

In the northeastern Syrian city of Qamishlo, a medical team composed of local doctors and students from the University of Rojava has come together to provide medical care to displaced families. The initiative is supported by the Movement for a Democratic Society (TEV-DEM).

The focus is on people who have fled to Qamishlo from areas such as Afrin, Sheikh Maqsoud, Ashrafiyah, Raqqa, and Tabqa. Many of them are living in temporary shelters and lack adequate access to healthcare services.

The team operates both a permanent medical center and mobile clinics that visit schools, kindergartens, mosques, and public buildings on a daily basis. The aim is to identify and treat patients at an early stage, particularly those with chronic illnesses, children suffering from skin diseases or fever, and pregnant women.

Severe cases are referred to hospitals, including those requiring surgical procedures or inpatient treatment. Surgeries and childbirths are directly supervised by team doctors at the “Şêfa Gel” Hospital in Qamishlo. Gynecologist Şoreş Osman, who medically oversees the project, reports that bone surgeries, cesarean sections, and the care of premature infants in incubators have already been carried out.

The necessary medicines are provided through donations from pharmacies and humanitarian aid organizations. Medical assistance is offered free of charge and is organized in close coordination with displaced communities. A similar model is being implemented in other cities of the Cizîrê region by the Kurdish Red Crescent (Heyva Sor a Kurd) as part of a broader civilian healthcare response amid growing humanitarian crises.
