The Kurdish Women’s Union has launched a petition calling for “a just and comprehensive solution to the Kurdish cause in Syria.”
Addressed to the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the international bodies concerned with human rights and international peace, the petition reads as follows:
“We address you today in the name of the values upon which the United Nations was founded, and in the name of the principles that affirm the right of peoples to dignity, justice, and self-determination within the framework of international law and human rights conventions.
The Kurdish cause in Syria remains one of the long-standing issues that has yet to receive a just and comprehensive solution, despite its profound humanitarian, political, and human rights dimensions. For decades, the Kurdish people in Syria have suffered from policies of marginalization, denial of identity, and deprivation of large segments of the population from their most basic civil and cultural rights. These policies have directly contributed to deepening crises and undermining stability.
With the outbreak of the devastating conflict in Syria over the past years, the Kurds have been among the most affected communities, despite their clear and responsible role in protecting civil peace, combating terrorist organizations, and preserving coexistence among Syria’s diverse components.
Nevertheless, their political and legal future remains absent from any comprehensive international solution to the Syrian crisis. In this context, the historic and prominent role played by Kurdish women in confronting terrorism and defending humanitarian values cannot be ignored. Kurdish women have embodied a unique model of courage and sacrifice, whether on the frontlines against extremist organizations or in protecting society and promoting principles of equality, justice, and peaceful coexistence. This role represents not merely a military contribution, but a living reflection of the Kurdish community’s commitment to universal values of human rights and women’s rights, as enshrined in international conventions.
Accordingly, we call upon the United Nations to:
• Seriously work toward including the Kurdish cause in Syria within any international political process aimed at resolving the Syrian crisis.
• Support a democratic and just solution that guarantees constitutional recognition of the national, cultural, and political rights of the Kurdish people.
• Protect human rights in Kurdish regions and prevent any violations or forced demographic changes.
• Encourage peaceful dialogue among all Syrian components on the basis of equal citizenship, justice, and the rule of law.
We also urge the United Nations to intervene immediately to protect civilians in conflict areas and to ensure the safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid, in accordance with international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions. Furthermore, we appeal to the Security Council and the Secretary-General to take all necessary measures to halt hostilities against civilians and prevent human rights violations, including consideration of deploying peacekeeping missions or international observers to provide urgent protection and assistance to those affected.
Continued neglect of the Kurdish cause not only threatens the rights of a single people, but also undermines any genuine possibility of building a stable and unified Syria based on justice and partnership rather than exclusion and denial.
We place this moral and legal responsibility before you, hoping that the United Nations will assume its effective role in supporting a just and sustainable solution that guarantees dignity and rights for all Syrians without exception.”
