Catalan MPs propose declaration on Rojava to Parliament

The spokespersons of the Parliamentary groups Candidatura d’Unitat Popular (CUP) – Defensem la Terra, Socialistes i Units per Avançar, Junts, Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC), Comuns, in accordance with Article 169 of the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament, propose that the Parliament adopt an institutional declaration.

The declaration reads as follows: “After the fall of the regime of Bashar al-Assad, a transitional period opened in Syria that required the participation of the various communities that make up the Syrian population: Sunni Arabs, Arab Alawites, Christians, Druze communities, and the Kurdish population, together with other minorities, without external tutelage.

The Autonomous and Democratic Administration of North and East Syria, recognized by the Parliament of Catalonia in 2021, has been one of the examples demonstrating the possibility of coexistence among different ethnicities and religions traditionally in conflict in the region, of the fight against terrorism targeting the Syrian population, and of a strong commitment to the role of women.”

The declaration continued: “In view of the current situation in North and East Syria, and the risk of a new massacre against the Syrian civilian population, including the Kurdish population in Syria, the Parliament of Catalonia:

– Reaffirms its recognition of the Kurdish population and the self-governing structures it has established.

– Recognizes the full diversity of Syria and the role of the Kurdish people in the fight against Daesh, the inclusion of diversity, and the rights of women.

– Demands an end to the isolation of the city of Kobane.

– Calls on all governments and international organizations to resolve the problems that fuel sectarian and ethnic tensions and to ensure that ISIS/DAESH prisoners are not released, as a measure to protect the entire civilian population.

– Calls on the international community to take urgent measures to prevent a massacre against the civilian population, the Kurdish people, the Alawites, and all ethnic and religious minorities.

– Defends the legitimacy of the peoples of the region who are democratically struggling to defend the interests, rights, and freedoms of women and the communities coexisting in the territory of North and East Syria.”

Background

In October 2021, the Catalan Parliament passed a resolution to officially recognize the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), marking a significant, albeit largely symbolic, act of international support.
