1 February declared World Rojava Day

Representatives from more than 30 Kurdish parties and institutions from the four parts of Kurdistan gathered in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, to discuss the situation in Rojava.

The meeting took place at the headquarters of the Kurdistan National Congress (KNK).

Participants agreed to organize an international conference in Europe and declared 1 February 2026 as World Rojava Solidarity Day, calling for mass demonstrations to be held worldwide. The meeting also decided to establish a diplomacy committee under the KNK umbrella, with the participation of representatives from all Kurdish parties.

A strong spirit of unity has emerged

Ahmet Karamus, co-chair of the KNK, opened the meeting by saying that the Kurdish people are going through a critical period. Karamus said: “At this moment, there are major international plans targeting Kurdish gains. These plans are not limited to Rojava. They encompass all of Kurdistan. The Middle East has entered a new period. Previous projections have been overturned. Old assumptions have collapsed. We need to see this clearly.”

Karamus stated that the Turkish state, with the support of international powers and particularly together with forces in Damascus, is making efforts to eliminate Kurdish gains. He said: “Our enemies aim to destroy Kurdish achievements across all four parts of Kurdistan. This poses a serious danger. That is why, as all Kurdish parties, we must set aside ideological and partisan positions and approach this issue with a new perspective that places the interests of our people at its center. All our work and efforts must focus on defending the values and gains of our people.”

Karamus also said a strong spirit of unity has emerged among the Kurdish people in response to the attacks and added: “As a people, we are hopeful. The Kurdish people are united in spirit and are responding strongly to the attacks. Our task is to answer these demands, to build our unity, and to stand against them.”

Unity is needed against the attacks

Miran Salih, speaking on behalf of the Goran Movement, said that the security of Rojava is inseparable from the security of all of Syria. Salih said: “This is an attack on the region. It targets the rights of our people. It must be confronted in the strongest possible way. There is serious public reaction in Europe, and there are some diplomatic efforts, but this is not enough. European public opinion and the media must be made sensitive to this issue.”

Hikmet Serbilind, chair of the Kurdistan Islamic Party, said the Turkish state is behind the attacks on Rojava. He said: “Middle Eastern regimes want to suffocate the Kurds. Muslim countries remain silent on this issue, as if they are approving what is happening. We must see this clearly. As a people, we must exercise our legitimate self-defense against mercenary groups and dictatorial regimes.”

Evdilbaqî Yusif, a representative of the (Rojava Self-Defense Organization), said it is a day of unity against the attacks. He said, “All of us must resist together, with one voice.”

Sheikh Ehmed, representing Tevgera Azadî (Freedom Movement)–Rojava, said unity has been achieved among the people, but fragmentation persists among political parties, and called on the Rojava administration to share developments with the parties. Ehmet Salihî, speaking on behalf of the Komalaya Hizbê Komînîst (Communist Party Union), called for greater sensitivity, while Mehmud Rojava, representing the Left Party (Partiya Çep), stressed that it is a day of unity for the Kurds. Bavê Narîn, representing the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Party, emphasized that all parties must work for Rojava from every part of the world.

Greater emphasis must be placed on diplomacy

Former diplomat Wurya Qeredaxî said the Kurds’ diplomatic engagement on the international stage remains insufficient and must be strengthened. Qeredaxî said: “Our people are taking to the streets across the four parts of Kurdistan and in many centers around the world. They are raising their voices for Rojava. A sensitivity toward unity has emerged among the Kurds. These are positive and encouraging developments, but they are not enough. Our diplomatic efforts, particularly at the UN (United Nations) and relations with states, remain inadequate. To overcome these shortcomings, we must accelerate our diplomatic work. For this, we must mobilize all our available resources.”

Southern Kurdistan is also under threat

Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK) Executive Council member Zübeyir Aydar stressed the importance of defending Rojava. Aydar said: “If we do not defend Rojava today, tomorrow or the day after it will be Southern Kurdistan (Başur). We must see this clearly.”

Kurdistan People’s Congress (Kongra-Gel) Co-Chair Remzi Kartal drew attention to what he described as an international plan targeting Rojava. Kartal said: “The aim and the plan are to ignite a war among the peoples and faiths of the region, to turn the region into hell. The Kurds will suffer great harm here. That is why we must speak with one voice. Our people are already crying this out, and we must become their voice.

The Rojava Revolution has resonated strongly around the world and has generated broad sympathy. Our sole objective is to expand this even further.”

Kartal also warned that a renewed campaign against the Kurds is being prepared: “An Enfal decision has been taken against the Kurds. After Iraq, they want to implement a second phase in Syria. This decision was not made in Damascus, but in Paris. We must find a way to break this, and we must succeed.”

We stand with Rojava as the PDK-I party

Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (PDK-I) representative Baha Ibrahimi said the party stands firmly with the people of Rojava. Ibrahimi said: “As a party, we stand with our people in Rojava. This is not merely solidarity; we are fully and openly on one side. Whatever responsibility falls upon our party, we are ready. Today it is Rojava, tomorrow it will be Eastern Kurdistan (Rojhilat). For us, there is no difference. We must speak with one voice against these attacks.”

Democratic Union Party (PYD) representative Mizgîn Ehmed said that defending Rojava means defending Kurdistan. Ehmed said: “Whether in the streets, in diplomacy, or wherever we may be, we must defend Kurdish gains with one voice and a shared sensitivity. Only through unity can we stand a chance of winning.”

Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (YNK) representative Sheikh Şemal strongly condemned the attacks on Rojava. He said: “The Damascus interim government is spreading terror against our people. They want to eliminate the gains our people have achieved. We must oppose this. Today our people are on their feet in Southern Kurdistan, Europe, and Northern Kurdistan. We must respond to our people’s stance.”

It was also announced that the decisions adopted unanimously at the meeting, along with the final declaration, will be published later.
