The self-defense vigils initiated by the people in the Jazira (Cizîrê) Canton against possible attacks and occupation threats by the Turkish state, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), and ISIS gangs continue uninterrupted.
Across the region, residents are keeping watch in the streets day and night to protect their neighborhoods and living spaces against potential attacks.
In many cities and neighborhoods of the canton, especially in Qamishlo, the vigils led by women, young and old people continue with great determination despite harsh winter conditions. Undeterred by snowfall, storms, and freezing cold, citizens voluntarily join the watches and carry on self-defense activities.
People trying to warm themselves around fires lit in neighborhood streets also keep the spirit of solidarity and morale alive. Despite the cold weather, high morale is observed at the vigil points, and people joining in traditional dances add a distinct color and vitality to the streets.
Citizens on vigil called on the people of the region not to worry. One participant said: “Let our people be at ease. Our youth and fighters will continue to defend you even in this snow and cold. These lands are ours; we will not leave them. Victory will be ours, long live Kurdish unity.”
Drawing on the experience created by past attacks and occupation attempts, the people of the region emphasize the importance of being organized and prepared against possible threats. At the vigil points set up neighborhood by neighborhood, both security is ensured and the sense of solidarity among the people is strengthened.
These self-defense vigils continuing in Cizîrê Canton are not only a military or security measure, but a social stance reflecting the people’s will, unity, and determination to defend a shared life. The people of the region stress that they will continue to defend their living spaces against all threats of attack.
