Following increased activity by armed groups in the region, the 74th Brigade of Hashd al-Shaabi sent forces to the Shengal border for security purposes. Hashd al-Shaabi officials said that the deployment aims to protect civilians and ensure security.
Shengal’s strategic location has made it a frequent target of attacks in the past. Thousands of people were massacred during ISIS attacks in 2014. In response to the threats created by attacks on Rojava by HTS, ISIS, and Turkey-linked groups, as well as the release of thousands of ISIS militants from prisons, the Iraqi Ministry of Defense also deployed additional forces to the Iraq–Syria border.
