Max Lucks, spokesperson for human rights policy, of the Alliance 90/The Greens said: “Following the massacres of the Druze and Alawites, we must acknowledge that the exclusion zones established by the transitional government bode ill. Wherever the transitional government attempts to invade, bloody violence and the displacement of civilians invariably ensue. This is systematic. Consequences must finally be drawn from this to protect the ethnic and religious diversity in Syria.
Foreign Minister Wadephul needs to face reality: the interim government does not have the situation under control and therefore cannot guarantee the safety of all Syrian citizens. Quite the contrary: it is declaring districts of Aleppo restricted zones under stable Kurdish control. This is creating chaos and is a threat to the Kurds of Aleppo. We are receiving explicit calls for help from Aleppo, including from 1,200 Yazidi families.
The German government must break its silence. There will be no stable and secure Syria unless Syria’s ethnic and religious diversity is recognized as equal. There will be no stable Syria without an agreement with the Kurds on equal terms. The international community is called upon to take a stand to prevent a further escalation of violence by the Syrian interim government. Interim President al-Shaara must understand that the path to normalization can be put on hold at any time.
