Health of two Kurdish political prisoners at serious risk

In a statement, the Kurdistan Human Rights Network said that two Kurdish political prisoners, Behram Majdifered and Shahin Wesaf, are struggling with multiple health problems. The statement said both prisoners need to be transferred to hospitals outside the prison, but access to medical care has been blocked for unknown reasons.

According to the statement, Shahin Wesaf was taken to a hospital in Urmia about two weeks ago, where examinations showed that he required surgery on the vertebrae in his back. However, it was reported that the necessary referral procedures for the continuation of his treatment were not carried out.

The statement added that Behram Majdifered is suffering from severe tooth pain and has kidney stones. Despite this, prison authorities were said to have prevented Majdifered and other prisoners from being transferred to external hospitals.

The statement recalled that Shahin Wesaf was detained without a court order on 21 September 2025 in Salmas by forces of Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and transferred to Urmia Prison. Wesaf was later sentenced to 10 years and one day in prison by Branch 2 of the Urmia Revolutionary Court on charges of “espionage for Israel.”

Behram Majdifered was detained in June 2025 in the village of Rezani, near Urmia, again without a court order, by Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence, and was subsequently transferred to Urmia Prison. Majdifered was sentenced to 11 years and 11 months in prison by Branch 39 of the Supreme Court of Iran on charges of “membership in anti-Iran groups and engaging in anti-state propaganda.”

The Kurdistan Human Rights Network stressed that the health conditions of both prisoners are urgent, calling on the prison administration and relevant authorities to immediately ensure that the necessary medical treatment is provided.
