Memorial ceremony held in Ankara for Hüseyin Aykol

Aykol’s body was transferred from Sincan Training and Research Hospital to the Yılmaz Güney Hall, which belongs to the Çankaya Municipality.

The coffin, brought into the ceremony hall and placed on the stage, was adorned with red carnations and candles were lit.

The current issue of Yaşam Newspaper, where Hüseyin Aykol worked, was also placed on the coffin. The newspaper’s headline read: “We have lost the revolutionary pioneer of the press.”

A banner reading, “The revolutionary plane tree of the Free Press, we will not forget you. 1956–?” was hung in the hall where the memorial ceremony is taking place.

The ceremony is being attended by Aykol’s colleagues, family members, loved ones, and many citizens, as well as Selman Çiçek, Co-Chair of the Dicle Fırat Journalists Association (DFG); members of the Mesopotamian Women Journalists Association (MGK); Turgut Dedeoğlu, President of the Press, Publishing and Printing Workers’ Union of Turkey (DİSK Basın-İş); Tuncer Bakırhan, Co-Chair of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party); Mertcan Titiz, Co-Chair of the Socialist Refoundation Party (SYKP); Tevgera Jinen Azad (TJA) activist Sebahat Tuncel; and many members of parliament.
