After suffering a brain hemorrhage at home, journalist and writer Hüseyin Aykol was taken to Sincan Training and Research Hospital, where he suffered a third brain hemorrhage. He had been receiving intensive care treatment since October 14.
After 2 months and 17 days, as the new year began, journalist Aykol passed away.
Having spent 51 years in journalism and publishing, Aykol devoted 36 years of his life to the Free Press.
Born in 1956 in the Salihli district of Manisa, Aykol became involved in the socialist struggle from a young age. Following the September 12 military coup, Aykol spent many years in prison, where he was subjected to torture and became both a witness to and a victim of human rights violations.
From the 1990s onward, Aykol worked as an editor and manager for numerous newspapers and magazines, notably Yeni Ülke, Özgür Ülke, and Özgür Gündem, continuing his journalistic work despite repression, closures, and attacks.
Within the Free Press tradition, Aykol contributed to the training of thousands of journalists and also authored many books, research works, and translations.
Through his struggle for freedom of expression and human rights, the students he trained, and the works he produced, Hüseyin Aykol left a lasting legacy in the history of the Free Press.
