38 parties condemn attacks on Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah neighborhoods

Thirty-eight parties, along with political, social, and women’s movements in North and East Syria, issued a joint statement condemning last night’s attacks by armed groups affiliated with the Syrian Transitional Government on the neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah in Aleppo.

Recalling the attacks on Shehba and the massacres of Alawites in coastal areas and the Druze in Suwayda, the statement noted that HTŞ (Hayat Tahrir al-Sham) had carried out attacks against groups that do not belong to its sect since it seized power in Damascus a year ago.

The statement pointed out that the Transitional Government had violated the March 10 agreement that called for a ceasefire across Syria and the April 1 agreement between the government and Sheikh Maqsood- Ashrafiyah neighborhoods of Aleppo. It noted that the Transitional Government was preventing the entry of basic necessities and spreading systematic hate speech as the blockade on both neighborhoods continued.

Despite the Autonomous Administration’s call for the implementation of the March 10 Agreement, the reduction of tensions, and dialogue, government officials supported by Turkey are preventing the agreement from being implemented, said the statement, adding that the aim was to sabotage the securing of the rights of the components in Syria and the implementation of the March 10 Agreement.

The parties remarked that the Turkish state, disturbed by the current process, intervened in Syria to prevent rapprochement between the transitional government and the SDF.

Recalling that the SDF had withdrawn from both neighborhoods under the April agreement, the parties said the recent attacks revealed the regime’s intentions, stressing that, “We stand with the SDF.”

Condemning the Turkish state’s intervention in Syria’s internal affairs, the parties called upon the US-led International Coalition to take responsibility against Turkey and the Damascus regime and to ensure the implementation of the March 10 Agreement.

The statement concluded with a call for all components in North and East Syria to stand in solidarity with the SDF in pursuit of the goal of a decentralized, democratic Syria.

Meanwhile, the Confederation of Democratic Society Organizations also issued a statement and said that the latest attacks undermined efforts to reduce tensions and build peace. The Confederation warned that any step toward war would have grave consequences for all of Syria, and that terrorist organizations such as ISIS would benefit most from this.

The statement held the Transitional Government responsible for the attacks and demanded that the government put an end to the presence of armed groups, stop the violations, and seriously implement the March 10 Agreement.
