Bozan: The root causes of the Kurdish question must be addressed

Ali Bozan, one of the DEM Party’s lawyer MPs, told ANF that a legal framework for a thousand-year brotherhood must be established, and that it must be written.

Bozan said that over the past year, the Kurdish Freedom Movement has demonstrated its goodwill, sincerity, and determination for a solution, while the state has not gone beyond verbal statements. “At this point, solving the issue has become a necessity for everyone in this region. Because of this necessity, I am more hopeful than ever,” he said.

The requirements of the second phase of the process

Bozan said that in the second phase of the process, it is necessary to discuss the causes of the Kurdish question, and added: “Wasn’t the emergence of the PKK a result of the denial of the Kurdish people’s existence, language, and identity? This is the cause that we need to eliminate. As long as these causes remain, any steps taken to address the consequences will not be permanent. Even partial steps, such as freeing political prisoners or withdrawing state-appointed trustees, can be reversed within a year if the underlying causes remain. That’s why it’s now crucial to take steps that eliminate the root causes of the Kurdish issue.”

The law of brotherhood should be written

Bozan stated that for the process to produce a lasting solution, “red lines” must be set aside and a framework for reconciliation and brotherhood must be established in writing. He said: “If we are talking about a thousand-year brotherhood in this country, we must create the legal foundation of that brotherhood—and that law must be written,” he said. Bozan stressed that removing the obstacles preventing those who have laid down their arms from engaging in democratic politics is now an unavoidable necessity.

Bozan also pointed to the need for concrete steps to be taken soon and added: “If the municipalities under trustee control are returned, people’s hope and confidence in the process will surely grow. There is no longer any legal obstacle to the release of Selahattin Demirtaş, whose case has been finalized by the European Court of Human Rights. If tomorrow Selahattin Demirtaş and the prisoners in the Kobanê Conspiracy Case are released, not only Kurds but many citizens will say, ‘Yes, this process is moving forward.’
