The Nexîl Center for Journalistic Rights and Freedoms has published a report on threats against journalists in Iraq and the number of journalists killed in the country over the past 10 years.
The report said that six years have passed since the Tishrin (October) protests, in which 200 people were killed and thousands injured, noting that 30 of those killed were journalists. The report said that the Iraqi government did not share information about the investigation on the perpetrators.
On the other hand, 2,700 cases related to murders and enforced disappearances in Iraq remain unsolved.
According to the report, 100 journalists have been killed in Iraq in the last decade. The cases dealing with 11 of these murders have not yet been resolved, making Iraq the seventh country in the world with the most violations against journalists.
According to United Nations data, nine out of every ten journalist murders worldwide are not investigated, and 41 percent of journalists are threatened before being killed. According to data by UNESCO, Iraq, Somalia, Syria, and Sudan are among the countries with the highest number of violations against journalists.
