A military source from the Deir ez-Zor Canton in North and East Syria stated that last night’s attack on a checkpoint belonging to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the town of Abu Hamam was carried out by an ISIS cell that infiltrated from the west bank of the Euphrates River.
Accordingly, the cell in question infiltrated the region from the desert countryside between Al-Mayadin, Al-Bukamal and the Sibeyxan area under the control of the Syrian Transitional Government.
Taking advantage of security weaknesses in these areas, the ISIS cell move to areas under the control of the Deir ez-Zor Military Council in order to reorganize and carry out sudden attacks.
According to reports, SDF fighters immediately responded to the attack and repelled it, forcing the attackers to retreat back to where they came from.
The military source pointed out that this was not the first such attack, emphasizing that ISIS has repeatedly attempted to infiltrate SDF areas from regions controlled by the Syrian Interim Government.
The SDF Press Center announced last night that ISIS had attacked a checkpoint in the town of Abu Hamam in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor with RPGs. SDF forces successfully repelled the attack.
