Kati Piri: The path to Turkey’s democratization lies in resolving the Kurdish question

Kati Piri, Member of Parliament for the Dutch GroenLinks & PvdA (Green Left & Labour Party) and former European Parliament Rapporteur for Turkey, met with Kurds for breakfast in The Hague.

In her speech, Kati Piri referred to the Dutch elections to be held on October 29 and expressed her concerns about the possible negative consequences of right-wing parties coming to power. Emphasizing the importance of solidarity with the Kurds, Piri said, “We will fight together for the Kurds to gain the right to education in their mother tongue and cultural rights.”

Kati Piri stated that they had added “the need for a peaceful resolution to the Kurdish question” to their election program, adding, “I believe this issue also holds significant importance in European politics.”

Piri mentioned her visits to the cities of Amed and Mardin in Northern Kurdistan, saying, “I still haven’t recovered from the impact of those places; I left my heart there.”

Referring to the peace talks in Turkey, Kati Piri said she was pessimistic at the beginning of the process but now hopes are rising again, adding, “I see positive developments in Turkey. The path to Turkey’s democratization lies in resolving the Kurdish question.”
