The women’s movement Kongra Star in Cizire Canton launched a campaign to write letters to Abdullah Öcalan on October 1, 2025.
Kongra Star made a statement regarding the results of the campaign and announced that 1,800 letters had been written to the Kurdish leader who has been incarcerated in İmralı Island Prison in the Sea of Marmara since 1999 when he was abducted in Kenya and handed over to Turkey as a result of an international conspiracy.
The press statement was read by Kongra Star Spokesperson Rihan Temo in front of the Kongra Star headquarters in the Xerbî neighborhood of Qamishlo.
Rihan Temo stated that Kongra Star joined the “I Want to Meet With Leader Abdullah Öcalan” campaign for democracy and equality, adding, “Within this scope, a series of events were organized in Qamishlo. Under the leadership of Kongra Star, marches and panels were held to support the call for ‘Peace and a Democratic Society’. The Peace Manifesto was read and public opinions were gathered. Most recently, letters were collected from all women from the women’s institutions and organizations in the region. The letters express great hope that democratic and legal avenues will open up for Leader Öcalan in the new process. Leader Öcalan will play a role in ending the conflicts in the region and achieving peace. These are also our activities against the international conspiracy against Leader Öcalan. We condemn the conspiracy and we will remain in action until Leader Öcalan is free. As women, we pledge to take responsibility for the call for peace.”
Rihan Temo called on international institutions to fulfill their duties for the freedom and right to hope of Abdullah Öcalan.
The event ended with the slogans “Bê Serok jiyan nabe” [No life without the leader) and “Jin, jiyan, azadî” (Woman, life, freedom).
