A Turkish drone crashed on Tuesday in the mountainous region of Qandil in southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq). The incident was also confirmed by Dilşêr Îbrahîm, co-mayor of the mountain community of Binarê Qendîl. The wreckage was discovered after the crash between the villages of Zergelê and Pirdeşal.
Video footage by the RojNews agency clearly shows the words “Kemal Atatürk” written on the aircraft. The drone was apparently flying in the Kuzîne region when it crashed for reasons that are as yet unknown. There were no reports of injuries.
The Qandil Mountains are part of the Zagros Mountains, which stretch over 1,600 kilometers through Iranian, Iraqi, and Turkish territory. Since the region is also home to the headquarters of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), it is regularly flown over and bombed by Turkish drones and fighter jets. In March, the People’s Defense Forces (HPG) shot down a Turkish Akıncı drone over Qandil.
