Civil society organizations in the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah neighborhoods of Aleppo issued a press statement regarding the current situation in two neighborhoods.
The statement was read to the accompaniment of Ahmed Birhat, Co-Chair of the Aleppo Council of Intellectuals, as well as representatives of political parties and civil society organizations.
The statement noted that the agreement signed on March 10 between Syrian Transitional Government President Ahmed al-Sharaa and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Commander-in-Chief Mazlum Abdi consists of eight articles, one of which concerns a general ceasefire.
“A 14-point agreement was signed on April 1, 2025, regarding the situation in the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah neighborhoods. However, the articles have not yet been fully implemented. This situation is having a negative impact on the daily lives of the people,” said the statement and condemned the mistreatment of civilians at checkpoints, particularly inappropriate searches targeting women.
The statement warned that such practices would have negative consequences for social unity and peace, and called on the authorities to launch an official investigation and hold those responsible to account.
Civil society organizations made the following demands:
“Full implementation of all articles of the April 1, 2025 Agreement; an end to all harassment and security pressures; freedom for the public to move, work; access to schools and hospitals; the launch of an official investigation into searches conducted during checkpoints and restrictions imposed on civilians; and an end to hate speech in the media and on digital platforms.”
