IDPs from Girê Spî demand a ‘safe return’ on the sixth anniversary of occupation

IDPs at the Girê Spî Camp, established by the Autonomous Administration on October 22, 2019, issued a statement on the sixth anniversary of the occupation of the cities of Serêkaniyê (Ras al-Ain) and Girê Spî (Tal Abyad) by the occupying Turkish state and allied mercenaries.

IDPs denounced the ongoing occupation in their cities, as well as the continued policy of Turkification and demographic change aimed at stripping the region of its original identity.

“What is happening in the occupied cities is a serious practice paving the way for their annexation to Turkey,” said the press statement read by displaced resident Ali Al-Abou in the camp square in the presence of dozens of displaced people.

IDPs held international forces responsible for violations in the occupied territories and poor living conditions in the camps and criticized their silence.

They called on the concerned parties to activate the March 10 agreement signed between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Transitional Government, to ensure a safe and dignified return of the displaced after the withdrawal of the occupying army and its mercenaries from their areas.

The statement noted that the Turkish attack on Girê Spî led to the displacement of about 100,000 people, approximately 7,000 of whom live in the Girê Spî camp, while the rest are distributed across the cities of Tabqa, Raqqa, and their countryside, where they face difficult humanitarian conditions after losing their homes and sources of livelihood.
