DEM Party calls for the immediate release of all politicians imprisoned in the Kobanê Trial

The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, at its 1537th meeting held on September 15-17, 2025, supervised the execution of the European Court’s judgments in the cases concerning Selahattin Demirtaş (No. 2) and related cases.

Recalling the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), the Committee stated that Demirtaş and other elected members of parliament had been detained without sufficient evidence, that these detentions were politically motivated and violated the rights to freedom of expression and political representation.

The Deputies further recalled that in the Yüksekdağ Şenoğlu and Others case the Court also found a violation of the right to a speedy decision on the lawfulness of detention on account of the use of stereotyped reasoning by the domestic court in denying access to the investigation file.

The DEM Party stated that the decision covers not only Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ, but all politicians detained in the Kobanê Case, stressing that unjust detentions must be ended.

The statement recalled that the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) had clearly determined in its July 8, 2025 ruling that Demirtaş remained behind bars for political reasons.

The DEM Party statement said, “Taking into account the numerous ECtHR rulings issued to date regarding Mr. Demirtaş, Ms. Yüksekdağ, and our other friends, and considering the latest ECtHR ruling dated July 8, 2025, the decision of the Committee of Ministers must be implemented and our friends must be released.”
