In a written statement on Thursday, the Confederation of Kurdish Communities in Germany (KON-MED) said, “The Kurdish people’s struggle for freedom and peace continues with determination, along with the campaign demanding freedom for Abdullah Öcalan and a democratic-political solution to the Kurdish issue. The international campaign ‘Freedom for Abdullah Öcalan – A Political Solution to the Kurdish Question’, launched worldwide on October 10, 2023, is now leaving its second year behind.”
The statement noted, “Over the past two years, thousands of actions, press conferences, seminars, and rallies have been held around the world. People from all walks of life, from artists to writers, academics to politicians, trade unionists to women’s organizations, have been part of this campaign and raised their voices for the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan and peace among peoples.”
The statement continued: “Despite severe isolation and torture, Abdullah Öcalan has not lost his belief in peaceful coexistence and continues to defend his vision of women’s freedom, brotherhood among peoples, and a democratic society. Today, this vision is a beacon of hope not only for the Kurdish people but for all of humanity. We at KON-MED reiterate once again on the second anniversary of the campaign: The Kurdish issue cannot be resolved by military means; Abdullah Öcalan’s freedom is essential for a democratic solution and lasting peace. Because, as Nelson Mandela said, only free people can negotiate; prisoners cannot make agreements. International institutions, particularly the Council of Europe, must fulfill their responsibilities against isolation, break their silence, and take on this historical responsibility.
On October 10, 2025, the second anniversary of the campaign, we will be in the streets with our people and friends in many cities across Germany. Through press statements and various events in Munich, Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Cologne, Hamburg, Hanover, and Berlin, we will strongly voice our demand for Abdullah Öcalan’s freedom and the peoples’ longing for peace. With these actions, we will once again demonstrate our determination to expand the struggle for Abdullah Öcalan’s freedom and a democratic solution.”
