The Security Directorate of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) has announced that the perpetrators who shot journalist Hêmin Mamend in the street in Sulaymaniyah on Tuesday evening, leaving him in a life-threatening condition, have been arrested following a successful investigation.
The two attackers are believed to be residents of Hewlêr (Erbil) with the initials Ş.R.M.S. and S.E.R.M. The authorities stated that, following thorough investigations, the decision to arrest them had been made in accordance with Iraqi criminal law. The investigations led to a total of four suspects, two of whom were arrested and two of whom fled to Hewlêr.
“The terrorist attack on Hêmin Mamend was planned and organized,” the statement continued. In the coming days, the authorities intend to publish further findings and details of the case.
Hêmin Mamend was shot by two men on a motorcycle in the Şoreş district at around 7:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday. He was hit by at least two bullets, and the perpetrators immediately fled the scene. Mamend, whose life was in danger, was rushed to the hospital and underwent surgery, while the security authorities launched an investigation.
