Accompanied by representatives of political parties and civil society organizations, as well as relatives of prisoners, DEM Party Iğdır MP Yılmaz Hun made a press statement in front of the Dumlu High Security Closed Prison No. 1 in Erzurum province and denounced the “major injustices” experienced by prisoners in Turkey.
Hun stated: “There are screams coming from inside. Families and prisoners have told us about very serious attacks and injustices taking place inside. That is why we are here. The prisoners say that starting on Monday, they will go on a hunger strike as a last resort.”
Hun stated that social activities, time outdoors and the treatment rights of sick prisoners were being denied and called on the Ministry of Justice to “allow independent committees to inspect prisons.”
Ümmühan Özkan, the mother of a prisoner, expressed her reaction, saying, “Our children are being tortured. Their rights are being denied because of the guards’ arbitrary acts. While we say, ‘We will make peace, we are in a peace process,” they are torturing our children. We don’t want anything for ourselves. We just want peace.”
