20-year legacy of “Şevbêrkên Dengbêjan” goes digital

Hundreds of klams (traditional Kurdish ballads), memories, and conversations performed by dengbêjs (Kurdish storytellers and bards) will now reach audiences on YouTube under the title “Şevbêrkên Şemdîn” (Nights of Şemdîn).

The program, which first aired on Med TV on August 1, 1998, continued without interruption until 2018 on Med, Medya, Roj, and Stêrk TV channels.

During this period, hundreds of dengbêjs from across Kurdistan and the diaspora appeared on screen, from Karapetê Xaço to Egîdê Cimo, from Fatma Îsa to Xalê Ehmed.

Hozan Şemdîn described the purpose of the project as “keeping the dengbêj tradition alive,” emphasizing that with the people’s embrace, this culture will be passed on to new generations.

Through the digital archive, the klams that carry the oral history of the Kurds will become a lasting resource both for enthusiasts and for younger generations.
