Free Student Initiative says Kurdish language should be defended
Free Student Initiative Ankara co-spokesperson, Özgür Abul, said that since the establishment of the Turkish state, all governments have followed a policy of assimilation. He added that this policy continues, and that it is a policy youths oppose.
Özgür Abul told ANF that after the establishment of the Turkish Republic, what was promoted was the defense of Turkishness and everyone who opposed it was eliminated. He added that “when you destroy the language of a society, you will destroy the essence of that society, you will dissolve it. The attempt to Turkify all Kurds, albeit artificially, is carried out through language. Which is why the Kurdish language is banned.”
Underlining that the prohibition of language is an important pillar of the policy of suppressing the Kurds, Abul said: “What the AKP-MHP fascism insists on is to separate the Kurds from their culture and language. What they want, which is a long-term policy, is to intimidate the Kurds. It has been like this since the Committee of Union and Progress. The process continues and we have taken a stand against it.”
Youth are alienating themselves
Noting that those who grew up in metropolises after the imposed migration became alienated and distant from their language and culture, Abul said that this was a tool to intimidate the Kurds.
Abul continued: “Everyone in Kurdistan who speaks Kurdish to their children is under threat, everyone who speaks Kurdish is in danger. The aim is to prevent the development of our region, to destroy its history and culture. That’s why the government also creates the conditions that force people to migrate.”
