At least 164 workers died in November, says Health and Safety Labor Watch

The Health and Safety Labor Watch (ISIG) released its monthly report on deaths at work. The number of workers killed in November was of at least 164. In the first 11 months of 2021, work-related deaths reached 2,017.

According to the report by ISIG, 149 of the workers who died in November were employed workers (i.e. civil servants) while 15 were self-employed.

Of those who died in the first 11 months of 2021, 1,722 were employed workers and 295 were self-employed.

Women, children, refugees

Twenty-three of the workers killed in November were women and 164 were men. Women workers were working in the sectors of agriculture, trade, food, education and healthcare.

A total of 154 women and 1,863 men died at work in the first 11 months of 2021.

Three child workers and 48 workers over 51 died in November.

Fifty-seven child workers, including 20 under 14, died in the first 11 months of the year.

Seven refugee workers, including three from Syria, two from Turkmenistan and one each from Russia and Afghanistan died in November, bringing the total for the first 11 months of the year to 83.

Cause of death

The sectors with the highest number of deaths were construction/road, agriculture/forestry, trade/office/education, transportation, metalwork, municipality/general, healthcare, security, cement and energy.

The most common cause of death is falling from a height, crush, shuttle/traffic accident, Covid-19, heart attack, suicide, violence, poisoning/suffocation and electric shock.

Death at nuclear power plant

At least three workers lost their lives in the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant construction. Workers say the deaths are being hidden.
