At least 8 soldiers killed in clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan at border
In a statement, the Ministry of Defence of Azerbaijan announced that 7 Azerbaijani soldiers were killed during the clashes between the Armenian and Azerbaijani forces near Nagorno-Karabakh. According to the statement, 10 Azerbaijani soldiers were also injured.
The clashes that broke out on Tuesday are reported to have been one of the most violent clashes between Yerevan and Baku since the end of last year.
Armenian officials reported that one of their soldiers was killed, 24 are missing and 13 have been taken prisoner. Yerevan also announced that two of their military positions have been captured by the Azerbaijani forces during the clashes.
Tensions have recently escalated on the border. Two Caucasian countries have been fighting to control the mountainous region of Nagorno-Karabakh.
Yerevan announced on Tuesday evening that a ceasefire was brokered by Russia. The belligerent countries blame each other for the outbreak of the recent conflicts.
Backed by Turkey, Azerbaijan launched a military operation in the fall of 2020 to seize Nagorno-Karabakh. More than 6,500 people were killed during the armed conflicts. After six weeks of fighting, a ceasefire was signed between Yerevan and Baku. Armenia had to cede several regions which it kept for decades to Azerbaijan. Around 2,000 Russian soldiers were deployed around Nagorno-Karabakh following the ceasefire. However, the tensions between the two countries have not come to an end.
