Lavrio camp residents salute the 15 August Initiative

A ceremony was organised in Lavrio camp of Greece on the occasion of the anniversary of the 15 August Initiative, the first bullet fired by the PKK at the Turkish army in 1984.

During the ceremony, the crowd displayed a banner reading “Happy anniversary of the 15 August, with the spirit of Xakurke resistance”, as well as posters of Kurdish people’s leader Abdullah Öcalan and Mahsum Korkmaz (Agit) and the flags of PKK, KCK, YPG, YPJ and MLKP.

The ceremony was also participated by the family of Elefteria Fortulaki who held a self-sacrificing action for the Kurdish leader on 24 March 2006.

Speaking after a minute of silence in memory of the martyrs of the freedom struggle, politician Nurhak Uludağ pointed out the significance and meaning of the 15 August Initiative. Calling the offensive a resurrection for Kurdish people, Uludağ stressed that the Kurds owe their existence to the PKK and the 15 August Initiative.

Following the speeches, a playground was inaugurated at the camp in memory of Elefteria Fortulaki.

The ceremony ended with the performance of the singer Yılmaz Tekin.
