HDP: CPT should put pressure on Turkey to end the isolation

The isolation on Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan continues. On November 27 2020 the prisoners went on hunger strike in Turkey’s prisons demanding the end of isolation and the unlawfulness in prisons.

HDP Silvan District co-chair Kenan Kaydu spoke to ANF about isolation and the hunger strike.

Kaydu stressed that the isolation has turned into a systematic torture and added that a democratic environment cannot be established without putting an end to the isolation in Imrali. “There are numerous attacks against our people and our nature. The problems in the Middle East worsened because of isolation. They are further deepening the isolation in order not to resolve the Kurdish issue.

The main reason for the isolation is the Kurdish problem. The main actor of a possible solution is Abdullah Öcalan. When negotiations were carried out with Abdullah Öcalan between 2013 and 2014, the whole world saw that there was a peace environment in Turkey. Nobody died at that time.”

A 4 minutes phone call is no solution

“About 4,000 prisoners have been on a hunger strike since November 27, 2020, to end this unlawfulness and isolation. They say, “Our action will continue until the Imrali is liberated.” The only concern of the prisoners is to establish an honourable peace. They have demands for justice and law. A 4-minute phone call will not solve any problem.”

Isolation has turned into a systematic torture

Kaydu said that “the CPT does not fulfil its duty. The CPT pointed to the isolation in Imralı in its report but did not put any pressure on Turkey to end the practice. The CPT has never made a press statement addressing the public. The CPT is an international institution and could step in to improve the conditions in Imrali. The Isolation has now turned into a systematic torture. It is not possible to establish a democratic environment in Turkey if the isolation problem in Imrali remains unresolved. Therefore, the CPT must fulfil its responsibilities and put pressure on Turkey to end the isolation”.
