Sit-in protest in front of the UN office in Geneva continues

Kurdish activists have been staging a sit-in protest in front of the UN Geneva Office since January 25 in protest at the inaction of the international community in the face of Turkey’s expansionist policy and the genocidal attacks on Kurdistan. The central demand is freedom for Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan, who is considered a key figure for a dignified solution to the Kurdish question. The activists resume their protest in a tent they set up in front of the UN Geneva Office every Wednesday.

The Kurdish activists demanding freedom for Kurdish leader have gathered at the tent early in the morning. The crowd held a moment of silence for Kasım Engin (İsmail Nazlıkul), member of the PKK Central Committee who fell martyr during an air attack of the Turkish state on Medya Defense Zones on 27 May 2020.

During today’s action which was accompanied by slogans condemning invasion attacks and massacres of the Turkish state, co-chair of Kurdish Community Center Salih Sağlam spoke on Kasım Engin’s struggle history, saying:

“Wherever we live, we will stand with the resistance inheritance of our martyrs, especially pioneer commander Kasım Engin, who sacrificed their lives in struggle.”

“The Turkish state fascism which has been internally routed against the struggle of the Kurdish people seeks to compensate for its internal downfall through attacking the Kurdish people. Aggravation of the isolation imposed on Leader Öcalan and the genocidal invasion attacks on Medya Defense Zones are mainly based on this pursuit. In this sense, standing with the “Time for Freedom” campaign against attacks on the nature, women and children means defeating the fascism.”
