Journalist Mehmet Üçar (Miheme Porgebol) has been sentenced by a Turkish court in the province of Batman to a prison term of one and a half years. The verdict was delivered on Friday by the 2nd High Criminal Court.
Üçar had initially been accused of “membership in a terrorist organization.” The proceedings were related to articles he wrote for the newspaper Yeni Özgür Politika and its cultural magazine PolitikArt. In this context, he spent around seven months in pre-trial detention.
The court ultimately convicted Üçar of “propaganda for a terrorist organization.” At the same time, the court decided to suspend the pronouncement of the verdict. This means that the sentence will not be enforced under certain conditions.
