Human Rights Committee visits imprisoned journalist Şêrwanî

The Independent Human Rights Committee visited journalist and activist Şêrwan Şêrwanî, who is being held in a prison in Erbil. The committee stated that the prison administration had rejected both of Şêrwanî’s requests.

According to the information provided by the committee, Şêrwanî requested permission to go home in accordance with existing laws and regulations. If this request could not be accepted, he asked to be transferred to a prison in Sulaymaniyah. Şêrwanî stated that he would end his hunger strike if his requests were granted.

It was reported that the prison administration and the legal unit rejected the request for “home leave.” Regarding the request for transfer to Sulaymaniyah, it was stated that prisoner transfers are evaluated based on the family’s place of residence. Since Şêrwanî’s family lives in Erbil, this request was also considered inappropriate and was rejected by the relevant committee.

In its statement, the committee emphasized that it will closely monitor similar cases in prisons and said: “We will continue to follow the process until the implementation of the law and the protection of prisoners’ fundamental rights are guaranteed.”
