Workers from Doruk Mining in the Mihalıççık district of Eskişehir began a hunger strike in front of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources after completing a march they had started to demand payment of unpaid wages and compensation rights. In the morning hours, police attacked the protesters, and 110 miners along with officials from the Independent Mine Workers’ Union (Bağımsız Maden-İş) were detained.
Bağımsız Maden-Iş made the following statement on its social media account: “While we were waiting to find a counterpart in front of the Ministry of Energy, the response was to detain 110 of our friends. We are miners; we will not be discouraged by detentions, we will get out and continue from where we left off.”
The statement also said that a miner named Yaşar fell ill during the police attack and was taken to hospital.
The demands of the Doruk Mining workers are as follows:
Payment of months of unpaid wages,
Payment of compensation rights to all workers who were unjustly dismissed before and after the TMSF takeover,
Ending the unpaid leave imposed on currently employed workers without their consent,
Establishing a safe working environment in accordance with occupational health and safety (İSİG) rules,
Reinstatement of workers who were dismissed because they were union members and took a leading role in the struggle,
Nationalization of the mine and guaranteeing job security.
