The Headquarters of the Association of Lawyers for Freedom (ÖHD) has shared its report on rights violations that occurred during the Newroz (Kurdish New Year) 2026 event. The report was read by Erol Koçer, a member of the ÖHD Antalya Representation, at a press conference held at the Education and Science Workers’ Union (Eğitim Sen) Antalya Branch on Monday.

Koçer stated that the report reveals not only individual incidents but also the “structural and systematic” dimension of interventions against fundamental rights and freedoms in Turkey. He argued that the practices targeting Newroz celebrations were planned and widespread.
The report includes practices such as long waiting times at entrances to celebration areas, body searches, and the banning of certain symbols. It notes that the colors yellow, red, and green, the expression “Kurdistan,” and traditional clothing were arbitrarily restricted. In addition, even activities considered peaceful—such as chanting slogans, dancing, and singing songs—were made subject to investigations.
According to ÖHD’s findings, at least 253 people were detained during the Newroz period, 63 were sent to prison, and judicial control measures were imposed on 112 other people. While the detainees included children, numerous complaints were received in some provinces regarding beatings, physical violence, threats, and psychological pressure.
Koçer emphasized that allegations of torture and ill-treatment must be investigated independently and effectively, and called for action to be taken against responsible public officials.
The report stressed that guaranteeing freedom of expression and the right to assembly is of critical importance for social peace and a democratic solution.
ÖHD listed its demands as follows:
– Ending arbitrary detentions and arrests,
– Conducting effective investigations into allegations of torture and ill-treatment,
– Ending the deprivation of liberty of children,
– Abolishing practices that restrict freedom of expression and the right to assembly,
– Recognizing Newroz as an official holiday.
The statement concluded: “We call on the public and international human rights mechanisms to be sensitive regarding the violations experienced.”
