Attack on Kurdish symbols in Qamishlo sparks protests

An armed attack on Kurdish symbols in Qamishlo has sparked protests and triggered new tensions in the region. The act is regarded by many as a deliberate provocation against the fragile stability in Northeast Syria. According to available information, a man opened fire on a flag of the Democratic Society Movement (TEV-DEM) on Saturday morning at the Zori junction, an important access point to the city. The attack caused widespread outrage among the population.

In the aftermath, numerous people took to the streets in Qamishlo as well as in other cities such as Derik, Girke Lege, and Rimelan. Through demonstrations and rallies, they expressed their opposition to the attack and emphasized the importance of Kurdish symbols and collective values. The protests also reflected the broader political situation in the region.

The background is the January 29 agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian transitional government, which aims at stabilization and social reconciliation. Participants in the protests made it clear that they view the attack as an attempt to undermine this process.

Security forces responded with increased measures to prevent further escalation or possible follow-up actions. Shortly afterward, the security authorities announced that the perpetrator, Hisên El Hiso, had been detained last night. According to the authorities, he is a man from the region who had previously come to attention for criminal offenses.

The arrest was carried out as part of a coordinated operation in cooperation with the security structures of the transitional government. In a statement, the security forces said that initial findings indicate the act was intended to stir unrest and incite tensions between communities. The case is being thoroughly investigated.
