According to the decision taken at the Kirkuk Provincial Council meeting, Mihemed Seman was elected as the new governor of Kirkuk. Before the meeting, the current governor, Rêbwar Teha, and the first deputy governor, the Turkmen Yawiz Hemîd, resigned from their posts.
In the vote held in the council, it was decided that Seman, who is the head of the Turkmen Front, would take the position of governor.
Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) spokesperson Karwan Gezneyî made a press statement explaining his party’s position regarding the process of change in the Kirkuk governorship.
In his statement, Gezneyî said: “We are a realistic party. We remain committed to the agreement we made. For us, no position is a political inheritance forever. A change of office is a democratic process.”
Karwan Gezneyî also commented on the boycott stance by the KDP, saying: “Those who oppose this change, why didn’t they come and vote when Rêbwar Teha was appointed? If those sides had previously come together with us, reached an agreement, and voted for Mr. Rêbwar, then today we could have carried out the change of governor together. However, since they did not come, we had to reach an agreement with these parties. We are proud of this agreement. Time will show who is good and who is bad in the future.”
