Ultra-nationalists attack students handing out leaflets with machetes at Ege University

A group of students at the Ege University campus were attacked while distributing leaflets on behalf of the Student Union. At the EÜ metro exit, a large ultra-nationalist group, most of whom were not students and were carrying machetes, attacked them, injuring 3 students. The injured students were taken to EÜ Faculty of Medicine Hospital and received treatment.

According to reports, private security guards (ÖGG) working at EÜ allowed the ultra-nationalists back onto the campus after the attack, even though they were still carrying machetes. After the incident, a group of students who came to the hospital to visit their friends were attacked again by the same ultra-nationalist group in front of the hospital. In this second attack, 19 students were injured. Police who arrived at the hospital reportedly used tear gas and physically assaulted the students who had been attacked. Police units that arrived on campus also surrounded the hospital. The students who were attacked were still waiting inside the hospital at the time of writing.

No information has been obtained about whether any members of the ultra-nationalist group who carried out the attack have been detained. It was also reported that the group responsible for the attack had previously threatened students on social media.
