Yazidi Youth Union opens a new library in Duhola, Shengal

A new library has been opened under the leadership of young people from Shengal. The Yazidi Youth Union inaugurated the “Martyr Pîr Çeko Library” at its center in Duhola on Sunday.

Following the previously opened “Martyr Vejîn Youth Library” in Khanesor, the new library has attracted significant interest from local youth and residents. In addition to Yazidi youth, members of village and institutional People’s Communes also attended the opening ceremony.

Speaking at the opening, the Co-Spokesperson of the Zorava People’s Commune emphasized the importance of the library being established by young people and expressed satisfaction that youth are engaging with books.

Participants entered the library accompanied by applause and slogans and presented a photograph of Martyr Pîr Çeko as a gift to the library.

The library contains hundreds of books in Kurdish and Arabic, including works by Abdullah Öcalan, Zekî Şengalî, and Sakine Cansız, as well as publications on the martyrs of Shengal and numerous sources on Yazidi history, culture, and belief.

Pîr Çeko, a commander of the Shengal Resistance Units (YBŞ) fell a martyr in a drone attack carried out by the Turkish state in Behrave near Shengal on 27 February 2023. Another YBŞ commander, Agir Cefrî, also lost his life in the attack.

Pîr Çeko’s real name was Tohum Ali Bedel and he joined the YBŞ from Zakho in 2016. In 2017, he took part in the liberation offensive against ISIS in Raqqa. He then moved to Shengal with the combat experience he gained there. He was a main commander of the YBŞ and was known for his humility and courage.
