Rêwar Abdanan, spokesperson of the Free Life Party (PJAK), evaluated the temporary ceasefire reached between Iran and the United States and its regional effects in an interview with ANF.
Abdanan stated that the future of the 15-day ceasefire reached after 40 days of intense warfare depends on the negotiations planned to resume between the United States and Iran.
Abdanan said: “Whether the ceasefire continues or ends depends on the negotiation process planned to restart between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran. If the parties fail to reach their demands and these talks reach a deadlock like previous negotiations, we will most likely witness the continuation of the war and even its escalation. It is clear that the United States insists on imposing its policies on Iran. If the Revolutionary Guards, who have effectively taken full control of the country’s administration, do not accept these impositions, this ceasefire may mean nothing more than a short breathing pause in the middle of the war.”
Abdanan pointed out that Iran’s post-war situation will deeply affect regional balances and said: “If in the upcoming negotiations the Islamic Republic of Iran is forced to make fundamental changes to its policies based on hegemonic ambitions, this will seriously alter the balance in the Middle East. The war has already left wide-ranging effects. From now on, neither will Iran look the same as before, nor will the balances in the Middle East return to the past.”
Regarding the effects of the ceasefire on Kurds, Abdanan said: “If the Islamic Republic of Iran turns this ceasefire into an opportunity to regain strength and increase internal pressure on the nationalities in Iran, especially the Kurds, while trying to hide the weaknesses created by the war, the crisis within the country will deepen even further. It should not be forgotten that all internal crises in Iran are still continuing and have become even deeper compared to the past. The Iranian people and the Kurds launched an uprising across the country in January, but it was brutally suppressed. The people have not forgotten this brutality. For a long time, the people of Iran and the Kurds have already separated their path from this regime. The Iranian administration, which suffered heavy blows in the recent war, will be weaker and less capable of governing the country than before. This situation will directly affect people’s daily lives and political attitudes; when crises exceed society’s limits of tolerance and the regime worsens the problems, society will react.”
Abdanan stressed that the democratic struggle of the Kurds will continue with full strength: “Whether this ceasefire is only a short pause in the middle of the war or results in a compromise between the parties, the democratic struggle of the Kurds and other communities in Iran will continue with full force. Because freedom, democracy, equality, and social self-governance can never be a subject of bargaining and are values that cannot be abandoned.”
Referring to the remarks of U.S. President Donald Trump about the Kurds, Abdanan said that Kurds closely follow developments in the region and shape their relations accordingly.
He concluded: “Kurds are a conscious and political society that struggles to preserve their existence and achieve freedom and democracy. These are extremely strategic and important matters. Therefore, Kurds carefully observe how other actors approach their demands and political programs and determine their relations accordingly. Kurds are highly determined and serious in their democratic and freedom struggles in the Middle East. The historical and strategic role of Kurds in shaping the future Middle East cannot be denied. Everyone must accept this reality and respect it. Regional and global political powers must now develop correct policies toward the Kurdish people and abandon unilateral approaches. Without the Kurds, it will not be possible for the Middle East to create positive change.”
