The independent civil council in the Amadiya district of Duhok issued a statement calling for the reopening of the road leading to the “Berî Sîlî” tourist area, which was closed by the Turkish state and the KDP.
The council stated that it had officially submitted its request to the relevant authorities in order to preserve historical traditions and serve the public. According to the statement, thousands of people are expected to visit the area on May 1 to celebrate a local holiday.
The statement emphasized that the civil council consists of representatives of all local and diverse families in Amadiya, and operates as an independent civilian body, whose main duty is to convey the problems and demands of the people to the relevant authorities.
“In recent years, this road has been closed by the Turkish army in coordination and cooperation with the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP), the administrative authority in the region. The area was eventually closed to civilians and turned into a military zone. The significance of Berî Sîlî for the people of Amadiya and for May 1 is not only related to nature activities but also to the cultural identity of the city.”
The council put forward the following demands:
1- The regional administration and local authorities must put an end to the military restrictions imposed by the Turkish army in the area.
2- People should be allowed to freely access their ancestral lands, and the area should be treated as a civilian zone rather than a military one.
3- The road must be cleared of war remnants and military logistics.
