Eman: Torture and isolation in Samsun prison

Baran Eman, a detainee held in Samsun Çarşamba S-Type Closed Prison, described rights violations during his weekly phone call with his family.

Eman said prison guards carried out raids on their ward, forcing them to gather their belongings within a short time and threaten physical violence if they refused.

He stated that he and two other detainees were taken to a different section and placed under complete isolation and solitary confinement. Eman also said that two detainees, Mahsun Aslan and Kerem Karagöz, who protested the situation, were subjected to assault by guards.

Eman said that sports and social activities have been suspended and that their communication with the outside world has been almost entirely cut off. He called on human rights organizations and activists to raise awareness about the situation.

Baran Eman was arrested during the curfew declared in 2016 in Nusaybin (Nisêbîn), Mardin (Mêrdîn), and was sentenced to 35 years and 10 months in prison. He has also taken part in long-term hunger strikes at various times in the past.
