Iraq gives green light to Hashd al-Shaabi: Right of self-defense

Iraq’s National Security Council has taken a notable decision following the recent rise in military tensions in the country. The council granted Hashd al-Shaabi forces and other security institutions the authority to respond to attacks against them under the framework of “legitimate self-defense.”

According to information reported in Iraqi media, the decision was taken after an increase in attacks targeting security institutions. Accordingly, security forces will be able to directly respond to attacks against military bases and facilities. Instructions were also issued to capture individuals involved in attacks targeting citizens’ interests and diplomatic missions.

Meanwhile, the Coordination Framework, composed of Shiite political blocs, also expressed support for the decision. In a statement, the attacks against Hashd al-Shaabi were condemned and described as “a clear violation of Iraq’s sovereignty.” The statement also emphasized that granting security forces the authority to defend themselves was necessary.
