Guerrillas based in Gare, within the Medya Defense Zones in southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq), celebrated Kurdish New Year Newroz in the mountains of Kurdistan with great enthusiasm and excitement, grounded in the spirit of Peace and Democratic Society.
As members of the free press, we, along with our colleague Hêlîn Harûn Çekdar, climbed to the mountain peaks together with the guerrillas to document their Newroz celebration.
Newroz, the herald of spring, has always been celebrated in the lands of Kurdistan on the basis of resistance. Despite all hardships, the Kurdish people have welcomed the joy of spring with great excitement, setting sail for new struggles and embracing March as a month of resistance and renewal. The guerrillas, the true sons and daughters of the Kurdish people, have carried this banner of struggle for half a century with great success, expanding the resistance for freedom.
For this reason, guerrillas in the mountains of Kurdistan welcome Newroz with great excitement and enthusiasm regardless of the conditions and possibilities. From the mountain peaks to the plains, they light the fire of resistance with great morale and spirit. As members of the press witnessing these moments, we shared the same excitement.
