Guerrillas celebrate Newroz at the peak of Zagros Mountains

Guerrillas celebrated Newroz, Kurdish New Year festival, around a fire in the Zagros Mountains—considered one of the regions that host some of the oldest traces of human settlement.

In footage recorded in the area, guerrillas point to the historical and cultural significance of Newroz, highlighting its connection to the struggle for freedom.

The freedom fighters state that Newroz symbolizes renewal alongside nature, rebirth, and a new beginning, and that this meaning is felt more strongly with the arrival of spring.

Referring to Abdullah Öcalan’s characterization of Newroz as “the beginning of a new life,” guerrillas draw attention to the tradition of resistance stretching from the past to the present, emphasizing historical continuity.

Their messages say that Newroz also holds significance for Öcalan’s freedom and the national unity of the Kurdish people.

The Newroz fires rising from the Zagros Mountains are described as one of the strongest messages of Newroz 2026.
