At least four explosions shook Hewlêr (Eribil). Air defense systems neutralized some munitions over Erbil’s skies. Smoke was reported rising from the outskirts of the city.
Erbil hosts the US Consulate as well as military sites used by international coalition forces. Recently, armed groups close to Iran have intensified their attacks on US troops and interests in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. Attacks carried out with drones have been particularly notable.
On the other hand, locations where these groups are present are also occasionally targeted by airstrikes attributed to the United States or Israel.
Between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, multiple rocket and drone attacks were also carried out against the US Embassy in Baghdad and the American diplomatic and logistical center at the capital’s international airport.
Kataib Hezbollah (Hezbollah Brigades), one of the most influential Iran-aligned armed groups, strongly criticized the US presence in Iraq in its latest statement. The group reiterated its call for the withdrawal of all foreign troops from the country.
Classified by Washington as a “terrorist organization,” this group is a leading component of the structure operating under the name “Islamic Resistance in Iraq,” which has claimed numerous attacks on US bases since the beginning of the war.
In recent days, explosion sounds have been heard almost every evening in Erbil. This situation is increasing concerns about rising security risks in the region and the potential for further escalation of conflict.
